Stimson Lumber - Priest River is looking for a talented Millwright Apprentice. Take your career to the next level: complete North Idaho College’s Maintenance/Millwright program and train on-site at our Priest River mill with the best Millwrights in the business.

You must have a desire to learn and to become a certified Millwright and demonstrate a commitment to tasks and responsibilities. You must be detail oriented with a basic mechanical understanding and aptitude in order to plan and perform a wide variety of maintenance, repairs, and installations.

You must be able to meet the schedule requirements to attend in-person classes and complete coursework, while also completing on the job training at the Priest River mill. Closely review schedule requirements below before applying.

Wages start at $33.00/hr, with incremental increases as program milestones are achieved.

IN THIS JOB YOU WILL…

  • Attend in-person classes at North Idaho College in Rathdrum, Idaho to complete the year-long industrial maintenance curriculum.
    • Classes run August 2026 &- July 2027.
    • Class schedule is typically Monday &- Thursday from 8 am &- 2:45 pm.
    • Additional English and math courses may be required, based on initial placement testing.
    • Courses require tools to complete hands-on lab work. Required tools and supplies are below, and cost approximately $2,000 - $3,500.
  • Train on the job with our Maintenance team.
    • Friday and Saturday noon &- 10:30 pm.
    • Additional shifts on Sunday and/or throughout the week following the completion of classwork. These additional shifts are somewhat flexible and will be mutually agreed upon with your supervisor.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices in all you do.
  • Work hand in hand supporting Millwrights in completing maintenance responsibilities: preventive maintenance, equipment failures and equipment repairs, other duties as assigned.
  • Proactively communicate with all departments to ensure proper operation and maintenance of systems and equipment.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL, YOU WILL NEED…

  • To make safety in the workplace a number one priority.
  • An understanding of equipment operation in an industrial plant setting; lumber industry is desired.
  • An understanding of maintenance needed for industrial equipment.
  • An aptitude for learning mechanical skills (hydraulic, pneumatic, etc.).
  • Ability to demonstrate basic math skills.
  • Exceptional time management skills.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., stand up to 10 hours a day, reach with hands and arms, stoop, squat, bend at the waist, kneel, climb stairs, and move equipment as needed.
  • Must be comfortable in year around outdoor temperatures, in loud conditions, with airborne particles (sawdust), and working around moving mechanical equipment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team player and highly self-motivated individual.
  • Willing and able to work weekends, off-shifts, and overtime as needed, both during and after the apprenticeship.

What Stimson covers:

  • Tuition for full 11-month Industrial Mechanic/Millwright courses at NIC.
  • Textbooks required for courses at NIC.
  • On the job training hours at the Priest River mill.

What Stimson does not cover:

  • Classroom time, drive time and time completing homework and other classroom assignments.
  • Fuel or mileage.
  • Tools and supplies required for the NIC courses.
